How to Pump at Work: 5 Must Have Items for Breastfeeding Moms

Personally, I had an overall great breastfeeding journey, and I wouldn't change anything...except having to pump at work. While I was dedicated to being able to continue breastfeeding after returning to work, it wasn't "fun." Pumping was probably my least favorite part about the entire breastfeeding journey.

There are some things you can get to make your journey a little easier. Unfortunately, it took me some time to learn about some of these things. Hopefully this post will get you there sooner!

This post doesn't include things like the pump and pump parts themselves. Of course, those are essential items to be able to pump at work.

#1 How to Pump at Work Essential: Hands Free Pumping Bra

Hands down, this is the number one thing I would recommend. A hands free pumping bra will allow you to do things like eat lunch or write patient notes (in my case- I was pumping between patients!). You also want a comfortable bra that can transition to a nursing bra. That way, you don't have to switch bras when you pick your little one up.

#2 Reusable Nursing Pads

Reusable nursing pads are great especially in the early days of pumping as you get used to everything. The last thing you want is to be caught with leakage in the middle of a work day. Reusable nursing pads help to prevent this. Plus, you're not disposing them each time and can wear and wash!

#3 A Good, Large Water Bottle

Invest in a good, large water bottle! I love Hydro Flask and water bottles with a straw. It's one less step of tipping the water bottle when you have the straw!

#4 Reminders of Baby

Videos and pictures of baby can actually help milk production. It can help stimulate hormones needed to improve pumping. With hours away from baby, these reminders can help you get more out of each pumping session.

#5 A cooler with Ice Packs

Whether you have access to a refrigerator or not, a cooler with ice packs is key. You may not want to store milk in a shared refrigerator or have easy access to one.
